About the event
Another business operates out of the Elston Farm: Earthworks Landscape Design and Construction. Mike Elston is a stone mason and hardscaper, creating outdoor living spaces for homeowners throughout our community. Mike is both an artist and construction worker; he loves natural stone and uses it to design functional spaces, using dry-laid practices. Come to the farm and learn about this age-old craft and how Mike performs it using a mix of modern and old tools and techniques. We will start by touring Mike's pet rock collections and learning about how different rock and brick forms are used in construction. We will also observe base drainage materials, hand and power tools, and a few basic hardscape construction techniques. Next, Mike will show attendees the Elston patio, walls and walkways. As a 125 year old farm, the residence has many obstacles, grade changes, and utility concerns to be factored when making a functional design. Mike will explain how one takes all these considerations into account to design and construct functional, enduring hardscapes for generations to come.
You will leave with an appreciation for the art of natural stone work, the true weight of heavy rocks, and inspiration to consider functional and beautiful outdoor spaces wherever you go.
The tour will be held rain or shine, and involves walking the grounds of our working farm. The ground is uneven and involves some inclines. Dressing for the weather and terrain is a must.
